This video introduces ultrasound scanning. With a frequency greater than 20,000 Hz, these waves are used to probe deep inside objects. Bats also use ultrasound to scan their surroundings, using echolocation. Builders can use ultrasound scanning to look for defects in pipes. A transducer emits an ultrasound signal which is both reflected and transmitted through a defect, then reflected off the end of the pipe. The transducer then calculates the distance to the defect as well as the distance to the end of the pipe. Ultrasound scanning is also used in medical imaging, primarily for pregnant women. It is non-invasive and completely safe. The signal reflects, gets absorbed, is transmitted off different parts of the baby which are detected and used to form an image.
