I finally found time to sit down and make this, courtesy of a long weekend, which I did right at the very end of it. Had been sitting on this particular idea for a while. I saw the 4K restoration of Millennium Mambo in a theatre (at a festival) a couple of years back, and since then, I have wanted to make an edit with it. Hsiao-Hsien captures the soul-crushing loneliness and emotional aloofness of existing in a chaotic, fast-paced city like few can, where Vicky - the narrator looking back at her past lovers - spirals into self-destruction in the neon lights and loud music of nightclubs while making smoking and drinking look cool. This year has flown by so quick, I could swear it was January yesterday. It has been so exhausting as I had to shift places within the same city and set up the new place. The year has been kinda weird and often sad. I think a perpetual coming and going of sadness like waves is the price of feeling too much. I'd rather feel sad than not feel much at all. The world just feels like a sad and hopeless place to be in right now, and the potential of my generation is being washed away, our youth spent toiling in front of a screen instead of living life.
