When We Are in Love 1. Love makes us cute: I have never considered myself particularly cute, yet when I look at her, I find myself speaking in a playful, affectionate tone. His presence alone makes me change. The more I love, the more loveable I seem to become. And because she finds this version of me endearing too, we both grow tender, as if love turns us into children discovering joy for the first time. And because he, too, finds this version of me endearing, we both grow tender—like children discovering joy for the first time. 2. A language of our own begins to take shape, little by little. Whether it’s a shortened phrase, a familiar place given a new name, a word for a certain gesture, or a term of endearment—our secret code takes shape, something only we can understand. 3. We begin to resemble each other. Not in appearance, but in the way we move, the way we speak, the way we exist in the world. People say couples grow alike, and perhaps it’s because to love someone is, in some way, to want to become them. Maybe that’s why we unconsciously begin to mirror each other, as if becoming one is the most natural thing. 4. We feel a tinge of sadness sometimes. Not the kind that pulls us apart, but the kind that teaches us to meet in the middle. Disappointment isn’t one-sided; it flows both ways, nudging us to understand, to adjust, to grow. Love, in its truest form, is a space where we confront our own shortcomings, where we come to know our dull edges and sharp corners. No one teaches us how to love, and yet, through love, we inevitably learn. 5. We find ourselves reaching for each other’s hands, often and without thinking. Not just for the warmth of touch, but because love, more than fleeting sparks, is a quiet and steady presence. It reveals itself in the simplest gestures, the way our hands seek each other, as naturally as breathing.
