Roundtable leaders Jun Okada (JEC) and Melody Lau (AEC) introduce the Culture and Arts RT: Perceptions, Cultural Expression, and Relationships. Turn on the closed captions for the English subtitles! Bonus fun facts: Melody did her EAS undergraduate senior capstone on the modern rapprochement between Malaysia and Japan after WWII! Jun is interested in environmental pollution chemistry and he wants to study public health in developing countries in graduate school in two years! Regarding our RT logo: One thing that came to mind when we thought about something that was shared in U.S. and Japanese culture was fireworks, especially for celebrations and festivals. Everyone--especially our RT members--is a unique firework. The loops/circles represent the past and the present/future that we as an RT hope to reflect on and reimagine. Specifically, the unfinished circle represents the present/future because it is still ongoing. The Japanese version of the RT name is in katakana because it is unique! Overall, we hope people who have unique perspectives will come to our RT. 0:00 Q: "Introduce yourself." 1:04 Q: "What is your RT and what is it all about?" 3:00 Q: "Why did you want to have this RT?" 5:24 Q: "How does your RT relate to the conference theme of 'Foundations'? 7:27 Q: "What do you expect from your future RT members?" ~JASC75 Conference Theme~ Foundations: Laying the Groundwork for Bilateral Reflection and Reimagination 価値への再考、未来への思索 ~Theme Description~ The holding of this year’s conference marks the 75th assembly of the Japanese and American delegations, a milestone in JASC’s long history, which prompts us to engage with its nearly century-long mission and grounded realities. How did the current state of the US-Japan relationship and JASC come to be? For what reasons and for whom do JASC and the bodies that compose the US-Japan alliance exist? Through this year's conference, we hope to facilitate multi-dimensional and esoteric discussions between delegates in order to work towards a more flexible yet resilient foundation for the US-Japan alliance.
