n this ABW Equip lesson from 1 Corinthians 1–2, we wrestle with a ministry question that hits close to home: do we actually rely on the Holy Spirit, or are we quietly depending on the world’s persuasive techniques to communicate spiritual truth? As we follow Paul’s argument, we see that the message of the cross doesn’t just shape what we proclaim—it also shapes how we proclaim it. If salvation requires God’s power, then we can’t treat ministry like a sales pitch. We must speak in ways that fit the gospel itself, trusting that only God can open blind hearts to see the glory of Christ. We watch Paul contrast the wisdom of this age with God’s “hidden” wisdom—truth decreed before the ages and revealed in Christ. The rulers of this world didn’t recognize God’s plan and, in their blindness, crucified the Lord of glory—ironically fulfilling the very purpose they opposed. That’s why we can’t think unbelief will be overcome by clever rhetoric or manipulation. Spiritual realities are spiritually discerned, and the Spirit alone searches the depths of God and makes the gospel known. So when we speak, we don’t aim to remove the offense of the cross or stir up worldly desires—we aim to be faithful to Scripture, because the Spirit works through the Word. Finally, we’re reminded that faithful communication isn’t the same as worldly accommodation. We can—and should—use clear, compassionate, compelling language, especially in missions and contextualization, but we must never reshape the message to make it more palatable. The natural person will still call it folly, and we shouldn’t be surprised. Our confidence is that God gives believers “the mind of Christ” through the Spirit, and that same Spirit enables anyone to truly confess, “Jesus is Lord.” So we depend on God in prayer and in practice—by refusing to tamper with the gospel, and by choosing to be faithful messengers, not accommodating ones. #bible #biblicaltheology #missions #missionary #gospel #jesuschrist #jesuschrist #ministry
