Probably the most famous Metronomic Tempo indication is the 138 Beethoven gave for his Pianosonata Opus 106, the so-called Hammerklavier Sonata. Beethoven's tempo for the opus 106 at least for the first movement has been discussed since 1850. But strangely enough, the 19th century musician would give a completely different reason for a suggested change than the musician or scholar today. It seems that our 19th century didn't struggle that much, if at all, with the technical demands the half=138 required, but with the resulting character. Whereas the modern scholar / musician would take a different perspective: the 138 simply is too fast technically, hence the (today's) general agreement - no questions asked- to lower Beethoven's tempo. Because we can't play it. So how is this difference to be explained?
