One of the most intruiging metronome marks ever certainly is the quarter = 138 Ignaz Moscheles gave for Beethoven's first movement of his Sonata Opus 106, the so-called Hammerklavier Sonata. Beethoven gives half = 138 so double that tempo of Moscheles.
