Protests in Serbia are intensifying. After a week of clashes between the police and anti-government demonstrators -- the government has announced tough measures will be instated. But the protesters' anger persists. Here's what we know so far... Peaceful anti-government demonstrations have been going on for months, but in the last week -- the situation has escalated. Violent protests broke out in Belgrade and other cities - and the government is coming under increasing pressure. The target here – the headquarters of the President’s party. The offices of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party - under attack… Buildings set alight – here in Valjevo - protesters use flares. In Belgrade - a brick through the window – prompting a visit from the President - who cuts his hand on the glass. Growing anger on display – directed towards the Serbian leader. The President - Aleksandar Vucic - is refusing demands to call an early election -- but the people want to have their say. Vucic has threatened a crackdown -- claiming the protesters are aiming to destroy Serbia itself. But the populist leader's threats have not prevented showdowns in the streets between the police and the people Protests began in November 2024, when a train station canopy collapsed - 16 people were killed. Demonstrators blamed corruption in the country's infrastructure projects. Calls for the government to resign began - and those protests continue, with no end in sight.
