During a stay at Sir Reuben Dortheimer's country house, Naomi, his wife and Daphne’s old school friend, asked Daphne to have a diamond ring fixed in Bond Street. Instead, Daphne had a paste copy made, pawning the original to clear her debts. Though she later retrieved the real ring after inheriting some money, she couldn't return it due to a quarrel between the couples and Naomi's unforgiving nature. With a party hosted by the Dortheimers approaching, Daphne seeks Pyne’s help to replace the paste ring with the real one. Pyne orchestrates a plan involving two dancers, Claude Luttrell and Madeleine de Sara. At the party, Claude, disguised as a dancer, charms Naomi on the dancefloor. At the pre-arranged moment, the lights go out, and in the darkness, Claude “accidentally” switches the paste ring with the real one. The next morning, Daphne returns to Pyne’s office. Pyne hands her the ring, revealing it to be a paste copy. He exposes her true identity as Ernestine Richards, Lady Dortheimer’s secretary. The entire charade was her plan to swap the fake ring for the real one without facing legal repercussions. Pyne, realizing this, declines to charge her as his services didn’t bring her happiness, as advertised. The furious Ernestine storms out, her plan foiled.
