Alright, so we’ve finally reached what most Resident Evil fans would consider to be the worst game in the entire franchise, or at least, the worst of the mainline entries if nothing else. Resident Evil 6. RE6 would go through one of the most ambitious development cycles Capcom had ever seen before, not just within the Resident Evil franchise, but across any of their respective properties. The project would be directed by Eiichiro Sasaki, the same director who oversaw the development of the Outbreak games back in the early to mid-2000’s, and one of the lead producers on the project stated in interviews that they were going to make the “ultimate horror entertainment”. Various members of the team would also emphasize across all of their interviews that Resident Evil 6 would be a balance of, and I quote, “all things people love about the series”, with it eventually being revealed that the game would feature 4 entirely campaigns each with their own characters, storylines, locations, weapons, and more. Capcom would end up pulling together a development staff of over 600 developers to work on the title, and while we don’t know the exact budget for the title overall, it was confirmed to be the most that Capcom had ever spent on a game up to that point in their life and is still estimated to be at least among the most expensive to this day. All of this effort would ultimately result in a game that, for better or worse, is still the largest Resident Evil game ever made. It would eventually release in October of 2012, and the reception was likely far worse than Capcom would’ve expected. Fans were disappointed, critics didn’t have many kind things to say about it, and this game releasing the same year as Operation Raccoon City tanked the franchise’s reputation so hard that many long time fans were talking about how they’d just given up on the series. But over this last week, I’ve sunk a little over 30 hours into the game after not really playing it much at all since its initial release back in 2012, and I’ve come away from this fairly extensive revisit with a ton of complicated thoughts on the game. So if any of you are down for it, let’s take a bit to look back on the good, the bad, and the ugly of the game that nearly killed the Resident Evil franchise.
