The text of this hymn was written by J. Edwin Orr (1912-1987), based on Psalm 139:23 and is set to the Maori melody, "MAORI". There is an alternate tune to this same text named "ELLERS". Both versions are published in Word Music's "The Hymnal for Worship and Celebration", the MAORI version being #438 and the ELLERS version #439. The Māori are the indigenous Polynesian people of mainland New Zealand. Māori originated with settlers from eastern Polynesia, who arrived in New Zealand in several waves of waka (canoe) voyages between roughly 1320 and 1350. Over several centuries in isolation, these settlers developed their own distinctive culture, whose language, mythology, crafts and performing arts evolved independently from those of other eastern Polynesian cultures. Some early Māori moved to the Chatham Islands where their descendants became New Zealand's other indigenous Polynesian ethnic group, the Moriori. --Wikipedia
