The attached drawing cannot be edited inside the drawing where it is attached, unless the file of the External reference is opened and changes were made on the external reference file. This is very useful, since these the attached drawing cannot be easily be edited by accident, and it saves time from duplicating drawings and managing the properties of base plans on different files, unlike using Block Reference as your base plans.
