Catanduanes offers Breathtaking Scenic Spots from overlooking views on top of hills and mountains. Binurong Point: • we started at 4am early in the morning motorbike ride from virac to Baras. We took a 45 minute drive and arrived at 4:45am. We started the hike as soon as we arrived to catch the sunrise. Local Guides and Fees: Local guides are available to accompany visitors during the hike which costs 250 pesos per guide for two hours and there’s a small environmental fee of 40 pesos that helps support the maintenance of the area. Short and Scenic Hike: Reaching Binurong Point involves a relatively easy 20-30 minute hike from the jump-off point in Barangay Guinsaanan. The trail is scenic, passing through coconut groves and gentle slopes before opening up to the wide, grassy cliffs. Along the way, you’ll also catch glimpses of the surrounding landscapes. • Sunrise Viewing: Binurong Point is best visited early in the morning to witness a spectacular sunrise. The early morning light bathes the landscape in golden hues, making the cliffs and hills even more magical. Many visitors make the effort to hike in time to see the sun rise over the ocean. Bote Lighthouse • Historic Structure: Although not as old as some of the more famous lighthouses in the Philippines, Bote Lighthouse has served as an important guide for maritime vessels over the years. The structure itself is simple yet sturdy, designed to withstand the elements, particularly the frequent typhoons that hit Catanduanes. • Short Hike to the Lighthouse: Reaching Bote Lighthouse involves a short uphill hike which takes about 20-30 minutes, but it’s relatively easy and manageable for most visitors. You will have a tour guide who will accompany you along the trail and pays 220 pesos. There is also a small environmental fee of 10 pesos to help maintain the area. The trail adds a bit of adventure to the trip, and along the way, you can enjoy the fresh sea breeze and the scenic landscapes. Panoramic Views: Visitors who make the short trek up to the lighthouse are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views. From the top, you can see the crashing waves of the Pacific, the lush greenery of the surrounding hills, and the peaceful, rural coastline stretching into the horizon. 3. Waterfalls: • Maribina Falls: Maribina Falls is one of the most accessible and popular waterfalls in Catanduanes, located in the town of Bato, just 5 kilometers from the capital, Virac. The falls are named after the two nearby barangays, Marinawa and Binanwahan, and serve as a favorite spot for both locals and tourists who come to swim, picnic, and enjoy the natural surroundings. • Solong Falls: Solong Falls is a hidden gem located in the municipality of San Andres, Catanduanes. • Abaca Plantations: The abaca plant (Musa textilis), also known as Manila hemp, is a significant agricultural product in Catanduanes, contributing to the local economy and cultural heritage. Abaca is highly valued for its strong fibers, which are used in a variety of applications. The pili nut plant (Canarium ovatum) is a significant agricultural product in Catanduanes and other parts of the Bicol region in the Philippines. Known for its delicious and nutritious nuts, the pili tree is often referred to as the “Philippine nut tree.” The plant and its products are integral to the local economy and culture. Food Catanduanes offers a variety of delicious delicacies that reflect the local culture and the island’s abundant natural resources. Here are some popular foods and delicacies you should try when visiting Catanduanes: 1. Sinigang na Isda or Codillo is a traditional sour soup made with fish, typically Yellow fin tuna, tamarind, and various vegetables like kangkong (water spinach) and radish. The tangy flavor makes it a refreshing dish, especially when served hot. 2. Pancit Bato is a A local noodle dish made with special flat noodles from Bato, Catanduanes. Pancit Bato is stir-fried with vegetables, meat (such as pork or chicken), and a savory sauce. It’s often served during special occasions and gatherings. 3. Suman/Latik is A popular snack in Catanduanes, suman is made from glutinous rice cooked in coconut milk, then wrapped in banana leaves and steamed. It is often enjoyed with sugar or latik (coconut caramel) and is perfect for breakfast or as a snack. 4. Fish and Seafood Given its coastal location, Catanduanes offers an abundance of fresh fish and seafood. Tapang Kalabaw is a dish which consists of marinated carabao meat that is usually cured and dried before being grilled or fried.
