Step back in time with a visit to the Moulin de Raire in Sallertaine, Vendée—France’s only windmill that has never stopped turning since it was built in 1555 🌬️. This personal vlog captures our guided tour of this remarkable working windmill, still grinding flour today using nothing but wind power. The tour was meant to last an hour, but thanks to the kindness of the father-and-son guides—who re-explained everything in English just for us—it stretched to two hours. The French visitors were incredibly patient, and the experience was unforgettable. 🎥 Why the video is in French: During the English explanations, we were too focused on listening to film—so the footage is from the French portions of the tour. But with the added text inserts, the video is self-explanatory and gives a clear overview of the mill’s operation. 📜 Historical Highlights: Built in 1555, originally with linen sails adjusted by hand In 1842, Parisian engineer Pierre-Théophile Berton introduced adjustable wooden wings—still used today Raised by 2 metres in 1864 to add grain storage Survived the decline of windmills post-WWII thanks to miller Amélina Burgaud’s dedication Still operated by the Barreteau family, who once ran 20 mills in the region Requires a minimum wind speed of 10mph; sails are chained down during storms The only windmill in France to have operated continuously on wind power since its construction 📍 Location: Moulin de Raire, Sallertaine, Vendée, France 🕰️ Tour Duration: ~1 hour (or longer if you get lucky!) 🌐 More info: [Vendee Guide – Moulin de Raire](https://www.vendee-guide.co.uk/moulin...) 🚗 Vlog Notes: As part of our summer holiday in the Vendée, we meandered through scenic towns and villages, avoiding toll roads with our trusty TomTom. The warm welcome from locals and hidden gems like this windmill make the journey as memorable as the destination.
