Excerpt from the S02 Episode of The Life-Sized City. Follow Mikael on Instagram: / colvilleandersen Urban and spatial planning was often a destructive tool employed by the #Apartheid regime in #SouthAfrica. After Apartheid was dismantled, there was a lot of work to be done and it continues today. Mikael meets Khalied Jacobs, an architect who was on the team in charge of renovating Cape Town’s Central Station and also eliminating the spatial, racial divides in the layout. The massive train station occupies twenty five city blocks and it is now an inclusive space for all users. Then Khalied takes Mikael to Spine Road, in the neighbourhood of #Khayelitsha - and former informal settlement now made formal. Here, Khalied shows how simple urban design tweaks were used to create the framework for citizens to take ownership of the space and establish a vibrant destination.
