After releasing their UK No. 1 hit single 'She Loves You' in August of 1963, The Beatles re-recorded the song in German on January 29, 1964. The backing track was re-recorded from scratch at EMI's Pathé Marconi Studio in Paris, France They also re-recorded vocals for I Want To Hold Your Hand that day (Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand), but used the backing track from the original UK single. This makes Sie Liebt Dich a unique recording; the group recreating the magic of She Loves You for the German market! For the 1963 She Loves You recording, John used his Gibson J-160e plugged into his Vox AC-30. George used his Gretsch Country Gentleman, also into his Vox AC-30 They most likely used the same setup for this re-recording in 1964. John might've used his Rickenbacker 325, but the tone sounds woody like the J-160. George most likely used the Country Gent again, although he did have his Gretsch Tennessean at the sessions (see my Can't Buy Me Love video) There are some slight differences in the way they play Sie Liebt Dich and She Loves You- see my 'Interesting Notes' section below for more details I'm using my 1966 Gibson J-160e for John's part. It's plugged into my 2010's Vox AC-30C2X and mic'd with a Neumann condenser. For George, I'm using a 2016 Gretsch Country Gentleman also plugged into my AC-30. Thanks @MichaelSokil for lending me this Gretsch! INTERESTING NOTES: 0:00 In She Loves You, John starts on the downbeat after the drum fill. In Sie Liebt Dich he's entering earlier, when the vocals start 0:04 George plays an A7, whereas She Loves You is just a regular A bar chord 1:03 In She Loves You, John plays the higher Em X79987 and George plays an open Em 022000 for this chorus. Here, they switch with John playing open Em and George playing the higher inversion 1:41 See above note^ This chorus is the same, George taking the higher Em and John the lower 1:50 George plays a more complex riff here than in She Loves You. He slides into the Low G note instead of just hitting it plain. Then he slides down from that Low G to F-sharp to E, instead of just hitting G then E 2:00 In She Loves You, both John and George sustain a glissando strum for the breakdown (John- X04232, George X5453X). In Sie Liebt Dich, George sits out for this breakdown MY GEAR: 1966 Gibson J-160e 2016 Gretsch Country Gentleman 2010's Vox AC-30C2X Neumann TLM-103 Thanks for watching!
