This performance of Dave Heath's incredible composition was played as part of the Chetham's School of Music February Music Course, at Manchester's Stoller Hall in February 2022. Sophie Stevenson is a 18 year old multi-instrumentalist currently studying at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester. She will be starting her undergraduate degree in performance at the Royal College of Music in London in September 2022. ________________________________________________________ 'African Sunrise depicts not only clear imagery of the vivid colours of Africa but also demonstrates the many different timbres of the marimba from the meditative choral opening to the virtuosic flourishes that decorate a varied and rhythmic melody. ‘Before the work ends, we encounter a fully awakened forest, full of language, colour, and sound,’ (Thom Jurek). Dave Heath has spoken about the inner meaning of ‘African Sunrise’, and its strong contextual links to the release of Nelson Mandela - a message that i consider to be of increasing importance now, and one i am passionately committed to convey through the music. Dave Heath’s original idea for Manhattan Rave included the vast potential for the use of samples and music technology, something that was able to explore in creating the track which links the two movements together. I took samples of exotic birds and messed around in Logic Pro X to transform the bird calls into industrial and city-like sounds. This movement, for me, features extremely vivid imagery, but this time of nightclubs, buskers, ‘trash’ instruments, New York soundscapes and jungle music. This movement was also a great opportunity for me to utilise my improvisational skills, as the actual content of the solo part is created and developed by the player. The cadenza is equally an opportunity for this style of improvisation and i had an amazing time painting a completely unique musical picture in this rendition. I had the best time playing this piece, and the opportunity to play with an orchestra is one i'll never forget. I hope you enjoy watching and listening to it as much as i enjoyed playing it!
