This performance of Dave Heath's wonderful work was for the Chetham's School of Music Concerto Competition Finals, at Manchester's Stoller Hall in April 2021. Winning the competition, the piece will be performed again as part of the 2021-2022 season, with the Chetham's Symphony Orchestra. Sophie Stevenson is a 17 year old multi-instrumentalist currently studying at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester ________________________________________________________ 'African Sunrise depicts not only clear imagery of the vivid colours of Africa but also demonstrates the many different timbres of the marimba from the meditative choral opening to the virtuosic flourishes that decorate a varied and rhythmic melody. ‘Before the work ends, we encounter a fully awakened forest, full of language, color, and sound,’ (Thom Jurek). Dave Heath has spoken about the inner meaning of ‘African Sunrise’, and its strong contextual links to the release of Nelson Mandela - a message that i consider to be of increasing importance now, and one i am passionately committed to convey through the music. Dave Heath’s original idea for Manhattan Rave included the vast potential for the use of samples and music technology, something that i’d love to incorporate and utilise as my skills taking A-Level Music Technology develop, moving forward. Again this movement features striking imagery, but this time of nightclubs, buskers, ‘trash’ instruments, New York soundscapes and jungle music. This movement was also a great opportunity for me to utilise my improvisational skills, as the actual content of the solo part is created and developed by the player. Going forward, i would love to incorporate looping, sampling and soundscapes into this movement, perhaps most crucially in the percussion cadenza. I have loved learning and establishing this wonderful piece, and performing it has been extremely momentous for me, so i hope that i have been able to convey my musical message to you.
