A free improvisation by Cheryl Pyle - flute, Urbuli Baba - drums, and Max Ridgway - guitar, recorded January 2026. Louise Bourgeois was a French-American artist. Though she has sometimes been linked with abstract expressionism and surrealism, she is not formally a part of any particular movement. Throughout her life she frequently returned to the spiral as a motif. She explained, "the spiral is an attempt to control chaos. It has to do with the fear of losing control, the fear of abandonment, the fear of being overwhelmed.” Bourgeois underwent psychoanalysis for decades, and found that the spiral aligned closely with psychoanalytic thought: repetition, compulsion, returning to trauma, the impossibility of closure. She considered the spiral to be an ambivalent symbol: both comforting and threatening, protective and destructive, inward looking yet outwardly aggressive. For Bourgeois, that sense of instability is the main point.
