Hello, dear friends and welcome to the Talyllyn Railway (Rheilffordd Talyllyn), the ‘Railway with a Heart of Gold’ in Snowdonia, North Wales. The Talyllyn Railway was the world’s first ever preserved railway and where the Rev W Awdry - author of ‘The Railway Series’ (Thomas and Friends) - used to volunteer. He based the ‘Skarloey Railway’ on Talyllyn and got lots of ideas for the books from his experiences working here. He even once accidentally left the refreshments lady behind when he was driving the train - immortalised in the ‘Peter Sam and the Refreshments Lady’ episode, which can be found on YouTube! ☺️ 🚂 And there are many other examples, as I’ve come to realise since learning more about this wonderful place! Thomas fan or not, Talyllyn Railway is the most astounding place to visit, nestled amongst breathtakingly steep hills and lush, green valleys, lined with slate fences and steeped in heartwarming history. Looking around, it makes sense that ‘the father of landscape painters’ came from near here: there’s just so much incredible inspiration, you feel like you could even actually be in a painting. A short walk from Tywyn Wharf Station is the beach where crystal waves lap the mirror-like shore and an easy amble from Dolgoch Station are the Dolgoch Falls, the Dolgoch Viaduct and woodland scenery that made me wonder if the Lord of the Rings should have been filmed here 🌳 They even do ‘Stations at Stations’ on Good Friday, where you pray the Stations of the Cross via train, stopping at each station to help mark each part of the devotions. Simply wonderful! I would say this place could help restore your aching heart… Please do take a look at their website, details below. The book was used as a basis for the warm-hearted, family-friendly comedy film ‘The Titfield Thunderbolt’ which, although they didn’t use narrow gauge engines, is supposed to be the Talyllyn Railway ❤️ Although not all the trains are featured in this video - but just in case you or the young people in your life might be interested in which train is which at the railway, perhaps having read the books or watched the TV series or the ‘Blue Mountain Mystery’ film etc😄🚂❤️ Talyllyn (number 1) 🟰 Skarloey Dolgoch (number 2) 🟰 Rheneus Sir Haydn (number 3) 🟰 Sir Handel Edward Thomas (number 4) 🟰 Peter Sam Midlander (number 5) 🟰 Rusty Douglas (number 6) 🟰 Duncan Tom Rolt (number 7) 🟰 Ivo Hugh Yes, the Skarloey Railway is real!
