Born in Sialkot District, Punjab during British rule, he was a leading member of the Communist Party before his arrest and imprisonment in 1951. He was released after four years and became a notable member of the Progressive Writers' Movement. Faiz was the first Asian poet to be awarded the Lenin Peace Prize in 1962 and was also nominated for the Nobel Prize in literature. Faiz's revolutionary poetry addressed the tyranny of military dictatorships and oppression.
