After posting a few songs by The O'Jays with Leon Russell on piano, I began thinking of other great soulful songs. The Temptations immediately came to mind with songs like "I Know I'm Losing You," "Ball Of Confusion" and "Papa Was A Rolling Stone." I couldn't link The Temptations to Leon Russell, David Gates or JJ Cale, but did find this cover of their 1968 Top Ten hit "I Wish It Would Rain" by Delaney Bramlett, who was a sure-fire link to Leon and David! Delaney recorded it for his 1977 album Delaney & Friends - Class Reunion. The credits on the album are full of links to Leon and Tulsa, Oklahoma. Co-producer Ray Ruff worked with Tulsa's legendary Jack Dunham, and the other co-producer Jimmy Bowen had worked many times with Leon and David Gates on sessions for Reprise Records artists. Among Delaney's musicians on the album were bass player Chris Ethridge and drummer Jim Keltner, who had worked throughout the years with Russell, Gates or Cale. Delaney wrote some of the songs on the album with Billy Burnette, who had recorded as Young Billy Beau in 1964 with Leon on piano. Background singer Clydie King recorded songs with Russell and Gates. I noticed another background singer named Patti Quatro. She is rocker Suzi Quatro's older sister. The album jacket is interesting too, as the front recalls Eric Clapton's first album with all the musicians shown in white shadows and numbered. I have not figured out who the numbers on Delaney's coincide with. Then there are three columns of names on Delaney's thanks list of, "those who have helped on this album, past albums, jam sessions, concerts, and who have just 'been my friends." Among the Tulsa gang and those close to Leon, they include Leon Russell, David Gates, JJ Cale, Carl Radle, Gary Sanders, Bill Boatman, Jimmy Markham, Bill Boatman, Tommy Tripplehorn, Marc Benno, Gary Lewis, John Gallie, Billy Strange, Chuck Blackwell, Elvin Bishop, Joe cocker, Glen Campbell, Jimmy Karstein, Gordon Shryock, Bob Dylan, Joey Cooper, Willie Nelson, Jackie De Shannon, and Larry Knechtel. There are many others I didn't name. All of the above are mentioned in the book Superstar In A Masquerade and are easily searchable if you have the Kindle version.
