This video is one stage of a 13-part series walking the entire Wye Valley Walk to celebrate the path’s 50th anniversary. The route and walks were planned by Ruth Waycott of Wye National Landscape, author of the brand-new Cicerone guidebook to the Wye Valley Way. A core group of around a dozen walkers completed the entire trail, with more than 100 joining various stages. I was lucky enough to become the group’s honorary videographer—capturing each day from the path. After much debate we all decided that to climb up and down Merbach hill in the heat of the afternoon towards the end of a long day was ... sheer folly. This meant walking stage six in the wrong direction. Up-valley and from England back into Wales. Never mind. The right decision was made. We set off from Hay earlier than is our wont; another good decision too. We had a good number of us out, stalwarts with new walking friends too. We had a fine day together and the undoubted highlight was being perched loftily high overlooking the beautiful borderlands below. The Wye itself was a fitful companion to us on this stage but the lazy old river was never far away. Conversation flowed, as always and it never got too hot although it threatened once or twice. Our dear leader played an absolute blinder. On a recce walk a day or two before Ruth secreted not one, but two secret stashes of water and you'll have to watch the video to find out was deposited in the comely churchyard of St. Mary's in Clifford. All oif us are looking forward immensely to further secret stashes, more Merlin bird listening and identifying and maybe a trig point or two. We are very much Hereford bound next time - heatwaves notwithstanding! This was our route: https://explore.osmaps.com/route/2754... We parked up here in Hay: Oxford Rd Car Park, Hay-on-Wye, Hereford HR3 5AJ What3words: ///joke.poses.tells and there is a charge here. Down the lane to this lovely place - Byford Church HR4 7LD What3words: ///armrest.anguished.exams - parking is free here but a bit tight if there are a few cars.
