Ubi Caritas et amor (2004) - David Briggs, sung by the Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge, directed by Stephen Layton with Harrison Cole (Organ) - recorded at St Eustache, Paris in July 2022. Hyperion Records 68440. Here is a piece I wrote for my beautiful wife Madge Nimocks for our wedding at Tortworth, Gloucestershire in June 2004 - how can it be nearly 20 years? 😘. Beautifully sung and played here by Trinity, here is what Joe Fort says about the piece, in the Hyperion programme note: 'Of all the works on this album, Ubi caritas et amor perhaps presents Briggs at his most intimate; indeed, it was composed for his own wedding to Madge Nimocks in 2004. The basic building block of this piece is a mellifluous, flowing melody that is heard in the organ at the start and which recurs several times across the work. Meanwhile, a slower theme for the choir floats serenely around this organ melody, somewhat in the manner of Fauré’s writing for choir and organ.' 'Ubi caritas et amor was written for Briggs’s wedding in 2004 and offers an ethereal glimpse of paradise.' (Gramophone, April 2024) I hope you enjoy this ravishing performance by this completely phenomenal choir, so enhanced by Harrison Cole's sensitive accompaniment.
