Why Should a BS3036 Consumer Unit Be Upgraded? If your fuse box still has BS3036 rewireable fuses (the old-style ones with fuse wire), it’s a sign that your electrical system is out of date – and may not offer the protection modern homes need. Here’s why it’s worth upgrading: Slower fault response – Rewireable fuses take longer to disconnect in a fault, which can increase the risk of fire or electric shock. No RCD protection – These boards don’t include RCDs, which are essential for protecting you from electric shock. Hard to maintain – You have to replace fuse wire manually if it blows, which isn’t ideal – especially in an emergency. Not suitable for modern demands – Today’s homes have far more electrical devices than when these boards were designed. Upgrading to a modern consumer unit with MCBs and RCDs (or RCBOs) gives you faster, more reliable protection, better energy efficiency, and peace of mind that your system meets current safety standards (BS 7671). It’s one of the best things you can do to improve the safety of your home’s electrics.
