Nachiket Utpat, sheds light on the often-overlooked challenges of pet ownership and its impact on both local and global wildlife. From his journey of transitioning from the tech industry to wildlife rehabilitation, Nachiket shares thought-provoking insights on responsible pet ownership, the ethical dilemmas of the pet industry, and the dangers of illegal animal smuggling. With a focus on promoting sustainable practices and advocating for the adoption of pets rather than buying, Nachiket encourages us to rethink our relationship with animals. Learn how making small, responsible choices can significantly impact wildlife conservation and help reduce the suffering caused by the demand for exotic pets. Pet ownership involves ethical responsibilities that extend beyond providing care. Every choice, from adopting to long-term care, has lasting effects on both animals and ecosystems. Adopting pets is a compassionate, responsible way to counter the unethical practices in the pet industry. The illegal wildlife trade harms ecosystems by removing animals from their natural environments. Raising awareness about the long-term responsibilities of pet ownership helps reduce the demand for exotic pets and supports wildlife conservation efforts. Owning a pet is a long-term commitment that goes far beyond the initial excitement of bringing an animal home. It requires ongoing care, attention, and responsibility for the pet's well-being throughout its entire life. Hailing from Mumbai, Nachiket's early career saw him thriving in the fast-paced realm of information technology. However, despite professional success, his heart was always drawn to the plight of animals and the natural world. This deep-seated passion eventually led him to make a courageous and unconventional decision to transition from the tech industry to wildlife conservation. At RESQ, a dedicated trust committed to providing emergency aid to animals in distress, Nachiket leads critical initiatives focusing on human-wildlife interactions, awareness and outreach programs, and animal rehabilitation. His role involves managing and coordinating these efforts as well as on field operations, witnessing firsthand the recovery and release of wild animals.
