April 1865. Abraham Lincoln is assassinated. The task of rebuilding the nation — and protecting freedom for four million formerly enslaved people — fell to his successor, Andrew Johnson. But instead of safeguarding freedom, Johnson destroyed it. He vetoed the Civil Rights Act of 1866 — the first law meant to guarantee equal rights. He opposed the 14th Amendment, which promised citizenship and equal protection. He pardoned thousands of ex-Confederates and restored their lands and political power, leaving freed people with nothing. Under Johnson’s watch, Black Codes spread across the South — laws designed to force Black Americans back into near-slavery. The Ku Klux Klan rose in violence, murdering and terrorizing those who dared to claim their rights. Freedmen who had just tasted freedom were beaten back into submission. Congress tried to stop him. Johnson was impeached — but he survived removal by just one vote. His legacy was devastating. Reconstruction collapsed, white supremacy regained its grip, and Black progress was crushed for generations. Andrew Johnson didn’t just fail to heal America — he proved how quickly freedom could be betrayed when placed in the wrong hands. ⸻ 📚 Verified Sources: • Congressional Records, Civil Rights Act of 1866 • National Archives – The 14th Amendment Debates • Library of Congress – Black Codes & Reconstruction • Equal Justice Initiative – Reconstruction in America ⸻ 🎙️ Blackout History We don’t tell these stories to divide.
