Brown-banded Cockroach (Supella longipalpa) The brown-banded cockroach (Supella longipalpa) is a small species of cockroach, measuring about 5⁄8 in (10 to 14 mm) long. It is the only species of the genus Supella. It is tan to light brown and has two light-colored bands across the wings and abdomen, they may sometimes appear to be broken or irregular but are quite noticeable. The bands may be partly obscured by the wings. The male has wings that cover the abdomen, while the female Class Insecta Subclass Pterygota Order: Blattodea (Cockroaches and Termites) Superfamily Blaberoidea (Giant and Wood Cockroaches) Family: Pseudophyllodromiidae Subfamily Pseudophyllodromiinae Tribe Supellini Genus: Supella 1. Adult female. Males have longer wings (About 2 cm.) 2. Male I think same size. Small. Distinctive Bands: They are named for the two light brown or tan bands that run across their wings and abdomen. Slender Body: Males of this species are generally more slender than females and have wings that fully cover their abdomen. The two primary visual indicators for sexing this species are the body shape and wing length Body Shape: Males are notably more slender and narrow with a rectangular body. In contrast, females are shorter, broader, and more robust in the abdomen. Wing Length: On a male, the fully developed wings are long enough to cover the entire abdomen, often extending slightly past the tip. Females have shorter, underdeveloped wings that leave a portion of their banded abdomen exposed Diet: They are opportunistic feeders that eat anything from food crumbs and trash to non-food items like glue and nylon stockings. A unique behavioral trait of the males is their ability to fly short distances or glide when they are disturbed, whereas females are flightless. Females: Are shorter and much wider (pear-shaped) with underdeveloped wings that do not reach the end of their body, leaving several abdominal segments exposed [1, 14]. Additionally, males are capable of flight when disturbed, whereas females are not. Urban Prevalence in India While found in India, the brown-banded cockroach is not the most common species in urban areas. The most prevalent urban species in India are: American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana): The most widespread and common species in Indian urban environments, typically found in sewers, drains, and basements.
