Fentanyl, which is a synthetic opioid, is 50 times stronger than heroin. Even a minuscule amount can lead to a fatal overdose. Because fentanyl is often mixed with other drugs, a lot of people take fentanyl-laced substances without knowing it, which puts them at risk for overdose. In 2022, nearly 80% of teens and young adults who overdosed did so on fentanyl. More and more teens and young adults are overdosing the very first time they try a drug. Dr. Laura Erickson-Schroth, Chief Medical Officer at the Jed Foundation, shares harm reduction strategies for people who choose to experiment with substances. She advises against using substances alone and recommends obtaining fentanyl test strips to check for the presence of fentanyl in other drugs as well as keeping the life-saving medication naloxone (Narcan), which can reverse opioid overdoses (including those caused by fentanyl) on hand. Naloxone is safe, non-addictive, and accessible to anyone over the age of 12 without parental consent. You can get it through a doctor, pharmacy, or community training programs.
