Walmajarri Language and Culture Presentation

“Local learning is important for us to learn in two-ways through the school. Learn who they are and where they come from, so they don't forget who they are” - Jeanelle Smith This comment by an Indigenous staff member at Yakanarra Community School, is what motivates and drives our On-Country language and culture program. We believe in the importance of our students maintaining their identity and practicing their language and culture in a routine and explicit manner. Walmajarri is categorised as an ‘at risk’ language and our Elders who still speak this precious language are determined to have it taught within our classrooms. This has been a joint effort with Indigenous and non-Indigenous staff alike, collaborating on a professional level to create ways in which this language can be revived and spoken for future generations of Walmajarri people. Created in collaboration with Walmajarri Elders, Indigenous and non-Indigenous school staff at Yakanarra Community School.
