Walmajarri country is in the Great Sandy Desert, south of the Fitzroy Valley. It is just one of many language groups from this desert region. Jesse Moora is a Walmajarri woman who lives in the Yakanarra community, a couple of hours south of Fitzroy Crossing. Her family was one of the first to settle at Yakanarra 25 years ago. Jesse and some of the other new arrivals brought a lot of kids with them, so they set up a school in a shed. She has been teaching Walmajarri to the children there for 24 years. In this video Jesse talks about how she used to catch and cook jarrampa, which are fresh water prawns. The conversation is translated by Jesse’s old friend, Eirlys Richards. Eirlys has also worked at the Yakanarra Community School, on and off, since it began. She also co-wrote the only Walmajarri dictionary, with her long term colleague, Joyce Hudson. This video was made when Jesse and Eirlys caught up recently at the 25th anniversary of the Yakanarra community. The animation was created and is kindly shared by Bernadette Trench-Thiedeman, Marsha Cook and Chantelle Berringale, from the Marninwarntikura Women’s resource centre in Fitzroy Crossing.
