Qin Shi Huang (259–210 BCE) was the first emperor to unify China, ending the Warring States period in 221 BCE. As king of Qin, he conquered rival states through disciplined armies, harsh laws, and efficient administration, then declared himself Shi Huangdi—“First Emperor.” He standardized weights, measures, currency, and even writing, binding his new empire together with bureaucratic precision rather than noble chaos. His rule was transformative but brutally authoritarian. He ordered massive construction projects, including early Great Wall fortifications, vast roads, and his enormous mausoleum guarded by the Terracotta Army. He also suppressed dissent, famously burning books and punishing scholars.
