Belisarius was the great general of Emperor Justinian I and the chief architect of the Byzantine effort to reclaim the lost western Roman provinces in the 6th century CE. With remarkably small armies, he won a string of stunning victories against larger foes. He crushed the Vandals in North Africa in 533–534, restoring Roman rule there with startling speed, then campaigned in Italy against the Ostrogoths, capturing Rome, Ravenna, and much of the peninsula. His success came from discipline, mobility, and tactical cunning rather than brute force. Belisarius repeatedly outmaneuvered enemies, held cities under desperate siege, and preserved imperial authority in lands long lost to the west. Though later campaigns were hampered by politics, jealousy, and limited support from Constantinople, his victories briefly made Justinian’s dream of Roman reunification seem possible.
