These images highlight Veere, a medieval town that received city rights in the 14th century, marking the start of its development as a fortified trading centre. The stone windmill “De Koe”, built in 1909, stands on a site where mills have operated for centuries. The city’s defensive structure is visible in the Bastion, part of the early modern fortifications strengthened during periods of conflict, including the Napoleonic era. Veere played a role in the Walcheren Campaign of 1809, when British forces captured the town during the Napoleonic Wars, after which the region soon fell under French administration. The historic town centre, with its preserved medieval layout, monumental houses, and maritime heritage, reflects Veere’s long history as a fortified and internationally connected port city. 00:00 Intro 00:25 Grain mill: De Koe 02:38 Bastion or city walls 05:04 The harbour, church and city
