The Walnut-Sized Wonder | Anna's Hummingbird Series: Episode 1

Welcome to the premiere of my 12-part series documenting the incredible life of the Anna’s Hummingbird! In this first episode, we’re looking at just how small these "flying jewels" really are. I discovered this nest tucked away in a Loquat tree in my backyard. It’s hard to believe, but the entire nest is roughly the diameter of a walnut, with the inside opening only slightly larger than a penny. In this episode, you’ll see: The Tiny Eggs: Two eggs, each weighing just 0.5 grams (lighter than a paperclip!) and about the size of a coffee bean. The Size of the Bird: An adult Anna’s hummingbird is only about 4 inches long and weighs roughly the same as two pennies (4.5 grams). Scale Comparisons: Look for the jujube fruit and a dragonfly nearby to see how these birds measure up to the world around them. This is just the beginning of the journey.
