In 1986, New Jersey synthesist Bill Rhodes released Quantum 12 on his own Jazzical Records label. Bill was among a small but active circle of Garden State Sagegazers that included D. Andrew Rath, Chris Wyman, and Chuck Van Zyl. Unlike the larger California or European collectives, this regional network functioned largely through self-released cassettes, mail order, and local New Age outlets. Jazzical Records appears to have been Rhodes’ personal imprint, giving him full control over production and distribution at a time when many independent synthesists operated outside traditional labels. . . . The title Quantum 12 likely reflected both scientific and musical ideas. “Quantum” referred to a discrete unit of energy, while “twelve” carried structural associations - the twelve semitones of the chromatic scale, twelve months of the year, or twelve-hour cycles. In this sense, the title suggested energy organized into a complete system. Musically, the cassette emphasizes steady melodic lines, repeating harmonic patterns, and restrained synthesizer textures rather than dramatic sequencing or overt Berlin School propulsion. Within the New Jersey scene, Rhodes’ work sits between Rath’s contemplative tone, Wyman’s atmospheric layering, and Van Zyl’s more outward-facing broadcast style. . . . The Sagegazers shaped their song; in time, the song shaped them. 0:00 As If Suspended By Clouds 8:52 Pianolith 17:57 Me Helix, You Axis 22:55 Satori 28:24 Yellow #2 31:41 Violet
