We’ve reached September on our off-grid homestead in Norway. On a rainy day, I finally catch up on all the tasks I’ve been saving – including starting to make calendula salve from our homegrown flowers. The misty morning chores take us out with the animals: the ducks run eagerly to the pond, while the sheep and donkey are led to pasture. Our Mangalitsa pigs enjoy a mix of fruit, bread and vegetables. We harvest mustard seeds, and I gather beets, pumpkin and chard for dinner. Two dear friends arrive from Denmark to stay with us for two weeks – and their visit quickly turns into a feast. Everyone joins the farm tour, and in the evening we try our hands at carding wool. While we ladies finish the calendula salve, the men begin a new project: building a smokehouse. It’s a week filled with both big and small projects and eager guests who want to experience all the farm has to offer.
