Secret South London history walk exploring the incredible legacy of Octavia Hill, co-founder of the National Trust and campaigner for London's open spaces and public housing. The walk starts at Copperfield Street and the Winchester Cottages then goes through Mint Street Park to Red Cross Gardens and Cottages. This was one of Octavia Hill's pioneering social housing projects. Established in 1887, the garden transformed a former industrial site into a public green space, reflecting Hill's commitment to providing urban dwellers with access to nature. Adjacent to the garden are the Red Cross Cottages, designed by Elijah Hoole in a Tudor-influenced style, which provided improved living conditions for the working class. We then go along Tabard Street, via St George's Gardens to Tabard Gardens, named after the former Tabard public house. From here we go to Bermondsey Spa Gardens on the site of the 18th century Bermondsey Spa, opened by Thomas Keyse in the 1760s. Our next location is Burgess Park created during post-war redevelopment, incorporating remnants of old streets, churches, and canals. We see the old Canal bridge then follow the Surrey Canal Walk to Peckham Queen's Road. Turning uphill we admire the views from Telegraph Hill Upper Park, another open space that was saved from development for the people of London to enjoy. Our walk ends at the magnificent Hill Fields preserved through the efforts of Octavia Hill and the Commons Preservation Society which was officially opened on 16 May 1896.
