LOT'S WIFE AND MOUNT SODOM "Lot's wife" is actually a mountain that is naturally-sculptured in the form of a pillar of salt, situated on Road 90, on the way to the Dead Sea. According to the biblical story, Lot and his family were helped by angels to flee when God destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. The angels warned them not to look back, but Lot's wife couldn't contain her curiosity, looked back, and turned into a pillar of salt. Mount Sodom, which is around 10 kilometers (6 miles) long and 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) across, is essentially a giant salt trap. It is unique in that it is a salt plug in a dry region. The central part of Mount Sodom contains a cave, with its entrance underneath the rock known as "Lot's wife", and can be clearly seen west of Road 90. The cave has two "chimneys", at the base of which tunnels were formed from the dissolving salt that combined to form one tunnel close to the cave entrance.
