Recent Developments at Royal John Mine Cave Steve Peerman John Cochran Abstract: The Royal John Cave has one of the largest and deepest underground lakes in New Mexico. Local efforts to protect this alpine cave resulted in NSS’s consideration of acquiring the cave for perpetual protection as a (national) NSS Nature Preserve. Based on meetings, written materials, and photographs, the NSS Preserves & Acquisitions Chair, Julie Schenck-Brown, visited the cave October 24-26, 2025. After seeing the cave and meeting the property owner, the NSS Preserves & Acquisitions Committee continues to be very interested in making the Royal John Cave the NSS’s first Nature Preserve in the Southwest. This presentation will bring everyone up to date on what has been going on.
