Here I show a striker I just made from a Nicholson file, it is an easy project to undertake and only requires a few simple tools. I simply snapped the file off at the desired length and then ground the edges smooth and chamfered the corners using a bench grinder ensuring I did not overheat the metal, dunking the file often in water. This is probably the cheapest way of improvising a steel striker. You must use old flies as the new ones are usually case hardened and won't work properly. You can usually find old files for very cheap prices, often free or for a $1 or two at flea markets and thrift stores. If you are lucky enough to live in an area where you can find flint, chert, quartz, jasper or petrified wood then you are also reducing your costs even more as you do not have to buy this either. Then all you have to do is harvest char material (or make char cloth) I demonstrate its sparking ability and get a few embers on char cloth with it. I post all of my videos on Australian Blade Forums https://www.australianbladeforums.com...
