This is a discussion piece on using files as strikers. I show the file strikers I have and how they spark and get some embers with all of them on char cloth. I also talk about what files I feel are best to use for this application. I certain believe you are not at a disadvantage if you decide only to have a file striker, as they certainly spark well. You could easily go your entire life only using a file as a striker for flint and steel. Using a snapped off file as a striker is a cheap way of getting started in flint and steel.
