KENTON COUNTY, Ky. (Perry Schaible) -- Many of us see the bus coming, but don't know if you should stop, go, or slow down. So, I went straight to the source to get the answer. Kenton County school district assistant superintendent Dr. Kim Banta took us on a cruise to refresh our driving etiquette. "This is where, when I was training," said Banta. "I got honked at the most because you stop and if that's red, I'm not going to turn on right. I'm only going to turn if it's green." We all had to learn how to drive around school buses. But how many motorists actually remember? Do you have to stop on a two lane road, four lane road, or if there's a median? Now is a good time to refresh your memory. Most local school districts are back in session and that means more buses on the roads. Dr. Kim Banta is the head of the transportation department for Kenton County schools. She got her CDL to know exactly what her drivers go through on a daily basis. She says the stress doesn't necessarily come from the kids, but other drivers. "Your fate is in the fact that people are going to pay attention and look at your sign and stop," Banta said. Bus drivers cannot turn right on a red light. They have to stop and look both ways at railroad crossings. Drivers must always stop on a two lane road when the bus is stopped and you are traveling the opposite direction. On a four lane road, stop for the bus. If there is a median separating the roadway, you don't have to stop, but Banta says slow down and watch for kids. "The other thing that just endears us to people is that we are going to stay five miles below the speed limit on a typical day. There's lot of reasons for that, but the biggest one is our stop distance," Banta said. Remember, it's all about keeping the kids safe, and the driver is not going to break the rules because you're in a hurry. "When a bus is stopped and the arm is out, and it says stop, just stop," Banta said. "You know, stop and error on the side of caution."
