The great Polish composer Frederic Chopin raised the traditional Polish dances to the level of the concert piano repertoire. The mazurka, a Polish folk dance found its stylization as art music at the hand of Chopin. In the mazurka, Chopin appropriated a dance form that he could manipulate with utmost sensitivity, subtlety, and myriad shades of expressiveness. The emotional range of his 50+ mazurkas he wrote vary from deep melancholy to abandoned gaiety, with many moods between those extremes. The accordion is known as a tool for "happy music," but being a truly multi-dimensional artist, maestro Galla-Rini, breaks with that tradition & gives us this beautifully melancholic dimension to his artistic expression. The serious musician strives to "channel" the thoughts of the composer whose work he or she is performing & maestro Galla-Rini is the only concert accordionist I've found who can communicate with his instrument with such depth of character. Oh, how the accordion world needs such extraordinary communicators today! I try to be an "interpreter" rather than just a "performer," but doing it like the maestro will always be just a dream for me. May God rest his soul! PS Can anyone out there show us how to obtain a copy of the biography by Ove Hahn shown in the slides? I would be so grateful to know more about this extraordinary man.
