Sea Kayaking Cornwall 2013 - Looe to Polperro.

After all the excitement, and rough seas around Boscastle, I really needed a calm day. I had a shoulder pull, earlier in the year, and wrist tendonitis 18 months ago, and the last thing I want, is one of those to flare up again. So a day on the south coast to 'recover' was the plan. I first discovered Looe, in 1988, after being told of it by a 'Cockney' fella, I worked with on a Building site. He was actually from Bracknell, but we used to call them all Cockneys, and they hated it, ha ha, to them we were Northern Monkeys, so all's fair in love and war. Anyway, I had recently bought a Type 2, bay window, Volkswagen Camper, Danbury conversion, and had planned a Cornwall trip all year. He told me' Looe and Polperro mate, go ever'y year with the Missus' so I thought, it must be worth a look. I arrived at Looe, end of August 1988, and was really impressed with the place. When I got to Polperro, the day after, even more so. To this day, Looe, and Polperro are still amongst my favourite places anywhere in the UK, the only downside, is their popularity, in peak season, there are heaving, I spent 1 and a half hours getting OFF the carpark at Looe in '96!!! and still had to drive all the way home. The fisherman you see on the Sit on kayak, told us, that we had 2hrs after high water, before the Looe river dries, so we had a rush job, but made it, the trip down the river is wonderful, and all the better for having tidal assistance, out beyond the Pier, and it's Looe Island, the shallows here were lovely, and a diving mask wasn't required as it was so clear. We stopped at the small beach overlooking Talland Bay, then it was Polperro. If you've never been, you're definitely missing out, it's one of the best places in all of Cornwall, a real gem. It's pedestrianised, so it has a unique quiet atmosphere. On the evening we left, the Fishermen's choir were performing their annual concert, and we had front row seats being on the water, but after I had snapped Matt's paddle, we were very distracted, trying to repair it, and realised that we had to rush back to fight the ebbing River Looe. I managed to repair the paddle, by re-assembling it, and winding my elasticated paddle leash around it, very tightly. This was remarkably effective, and allowed me to cautiously paddle the 6 miles back. If there had been any amount of waves it would've been a definite no, as the paddle wouldn't have survived use in a low brace, I'm sure. But it got us back, although we pulled out at the slip in town, rather than risk, the narrows under the bridge.
