The killing of two US citizens, Alex Pretti and Renee Good, by federal immigration agents in the city has sparked outrage and is now raising the possibility of a partial government shutdown. In an interview with Al Jazeera, Jeanne Massey, a local resident and community outreach worker who was a neighbour of Pretti, said Pretti — a 37‑year‑old intensive care nurse — was shot by a federal agent, and many residents have little faith in Homan’s proposed de‑escalation plan. “Everyone I know feels this plan won’t change anything,” Massey said. “The fear in our community is real and constant. Families are terrified every single day, even if they’re US citizens.” She described ICE operations as “militarised, aggressive, and completely out of control,” adding, “They kept the scene after the shooting, and the more the community came to bear witness, the more they escalated. They tear‑gassed us while we were standing in solidarity with our neighbour.” Massey highlighted the growing role of local groups in response to the crisis: “We are showing up for each other, making sure people have food, can get to work safely, and that children are protected.
