Atma Sakshatkara: Direct Awareness of the Real Self — As Revealed by Bhagwan Sri Ramana Maharshi Bhagwan Sri Ramana Maharshi’s teaching is the simplest and most direct path to liberation: Self-realization is not something to be achieved, but something to be recognized. The Self is already present in every heart, yet we remain unaware because we are identified with the body, mind, and ego. Ramana Maharshi says that the entire spiritual journey is summed up in one question: “Who am I?” This question is not meant to be answered by the mind with words or logic. It is meant to turn the attention inward, to the source of the “I”-thought. The mind is a bundle of thoughts, and all thoughts arise only because of the sense of “I”. If the “I” is removed, the mind dissolves. The Core of Atma Sakshatkara Atma Sakshatkara means direct realization of the Self, beyond thoughts, beyond emotions, beyond the body. It is the immediate recognition of the pure awareness that is the essence of your being. Ramana Maharshi explains that the Self is: Ever-present Unchanging Eternal The witness of all experiences The source of all peace and bliss The Method of Self-Inquiry (Vichara) The most powerful practice taught by Ramana Maharshi is Self-Inquiry: Ask yourself: “Who am I?” Do not seek an intellectual answer. Trace the ‘I’-thought back to its source. Remain as the witness of the thought. The moment the ‘I’ dissolves, the Self shines forth. Ramana Maharshi says that the Self cannot be known by searching outward. The search must be inward, to the source of the “I”-thought. “The Self is already realized. The only obstacle is the false identification with the body-mind.” The Result of Atma Sakshatkara When the Self is directly realized: The ego disappears. Fear and sorrow vanish. The sense of separation dissolves. Only pure peace remains. Ramana Maharshi’s final message is simple and eternal: “You are already That. Recognize it now.”
