Peter Sculthorpe Djilile (1989) from Three Pieces for Piano *Permissions - Australian Performing Rights Association Licence: 03138268 - Receipt 15734949* A live performance from the Team of Pianists’ Rigg Bequest 2021 Classic Music in Historic Venues - Recital 2. From the Programme notes to the score, Sculthorpe wrote: “Djilile is based upon an adaption of an Aboriginal melody collected in northern Australia, in the late 1950’s, by A P Elkin and Trevor Jones. The title means ‘whistling duck on a billabong’. The composer expresses special fondness for this melody, which he used in a number of his other works. “Billabong” is an Australian word for a small inland body of water, a backwater or pool often made by water flowing from the main part of a river during a flood. “Billabong” is believed to come from a Wiradjuri word ‘bilabang” meaning lake. To find recorded CD performances of this piece you could start with Move Records, Tall Poppies Records and ABC Classics; there are many fabulous CD recordings out there!
