Sierra backpacking: Bubbs Creek (Kings Canyon), Lower Vidette Meadow, Charlotte Lake, Bullfrog Lake, Kearsarge Lakes, Kearsarge Pass to Onion Valley Kearsarge Pass Trailhead. Kings Canyon National Park John Muir Wilderness - Inyo National Forest Independence, California. Eastern Sierra, Sierra Nevada. Trailhead: Onion Valley, Kearsarge Pass Trailhead August 2024 Itinerary: This video covers day six and seven of a seven day backpacking trip from the Kearsarge Pass Onion Valley Trailhead which included Kearsarge Pass, Forester Pass, the Bighorn Plateau, the Kern River headwaters and the Lake South America Loop, Center Basin, Charlotte lake and the Kearsarge Lakes. Day 6: JMT/PCT Trail from Bubbs Creek camp in Kings Canyon to the Charlotte Lake Trail junction via Lower Vidette Meadow. Charlotte Lake Trail to Charlotte Lake and back to JMT/PCT trail junction with the Bullfrog Lake Trail. Bullfrog Lake Trail to Kearsarge Lakes Trail junction via Bullfrog Lake. Kearsarge Lakes Trail to the Kearsarge Lakes. Camp at Kearsarge Lakes. Evening hike around the Kearsarge Lakes. Day 7: Kearsarge Lakes camp to Kearsarge Lakes Trail, Bullfrog Lake Trail to junction to Kearsarge Pass Trail. Kearsarge Pass Trail to Kearsarge Pass and descent to the Kearsarge Pass Onion Valley Trailhead. Trip Section Stats: 16.3 mi, approx 2500 ft elevation gain. Notes about the map: the map is indicative of the trip itinerary although mileage and moving time cannot be considered as reference as I often deviated from the route for filming and photography; also the moving time on the map includes all stops and breaks during the day as I stopped recording only when camp was setup for each day. Hike Notes: The Kearsarge Lakes and surrounding peaks are truly a spectacular area. A classic Eastern Sierra gem not to be missed. When I planned this trip I knew I wanted to spend my last night of the trip there, before exiting on the last day to the Onion Valley trailhead through the Kearsarge Pass. Camping at the Kearsarge Lakes is always busy in the summer time, as the location is both extremely beautiful and it is also a very convenient stop for backpackers going in and out the Kearsarge Pass trailhead. On my way from my previous camp in Kings Canyon (Bubbs creek camp, near the JMT/PCT junction with the Junction Pass Trail) I reached the Charlotte Lake at around noon. This was another spectacular location I wanted to visit on this trip. Charlotte Lake deep blue waters sits in a bowl surrounded by mountains that are forested at lower elevation around the lake. Contrary to the Kearsarge Lakes, Charlotte Lake is usually not very busy despite not being too far out of the way from the JMT/PCT corridor. I enjoyed my lunch there, then it was a fairly short hike to Bullfrog Lake and from there to the Kearsarge Lakes which I reached by mid afternoon. I had plenty of time to hike around the Kearsarge Lakes during the rest of the day into sun down, with countless spectacular views with the evening light into the golden hour and blue hour. A beautiful summer night in a beautiful location in the Sierras. I took many pictures and video footage which I will enjoy in the winter time.
