It cannot be approached without proper preparation. Traveled daily distances and elevation gains information are not necessarily good reference indications as they are contingent to weather, snow conditions, river fording conditions, etc. For this reason I purposely omitted them for this backpacking trip as they could be misleading for trip planning. Hiking Notes: The landscape created by the Quizapú Volcano eruptions: In 1846 and 1932 the violent eruptions of the Quizapú volcano drastically changed the landscape of a vast area of the Chilean Cordillera in the Maule region. Today, a surreal landscape of pumice and lava rockscapes can be traversed through a network of fain mountain trails. It is a landscape where the sparse vegetation is often only present in close proximity of rivers, streams and lakes. This amazing natural beauty is paired with a harsh environment where constant sun exposure, wind, sand and snow make for some hard hiking. At every turn you are reminded that you are walking through the land of the volcanoes. I have been interested in doing this route for about three years and I had to postpone this trip in 2023. Having a lot of anticipation and expectations for a backpacking trip is not always a good thing. But in this case, the GPT06 Volcán Descabezado route was an amazing hiking trip which exceeded my expectations. The area of Volcán Descabezado is indeed a truly unique landscape. Because the volcanic events of the last two centuries have transformed it into a unique natural wonder. Its remoteness and its harsh environment conditions further accentuate the hiking experience and makes it even more memorable. Through the entire itinerary the presence of the great Volcanoes can be seen, felt and experienced. I find it very difficult, or impossible, to put into words this hike experience. I hope the video footage do some justice even tough I sometime feel it does not. A truly magnificent hike.
